Promoting Effective Policies for Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) Project

Welcome to the website of the Promoting Effective Policies for Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) project, a platform for sharing research, information and news on this innovative research project, as well as key policy documents and news items on women’s economic empowerment in Ghana.

Our Research Focus

Sectoral Policies

In looking at sector-specific policies, we were guided by government investments in specific sectors over the last half decade.  Digitilisation, championed by the current Vice President of Ghana and financial inclusion, which has gained especial currency in the post-COVID era came up as our two areas of concern.

Social Policies

Social policies are generally designed to provide support to citizens. Women tend to be more vulnerable than men to negative economic and increasingly climate shocks. As such, they are more in need of supportive social policies that are designed to address their challenges. Given the large informal economy in Ghana and the undue burden of childcare responsibilities on women, we explore the implications of employment and care policies for Ghanaian women.

Macro-economic Policies

In the macro-economic arena, how much money is mobilised by government from different segments of the population and how much money is spent by government on the different segments of the population has gendered implications. As such, we focus on domestic resource mobilisation and spending.
